Only reply to all when you have something TRULY worthwhile that everyone needs to hear.

Would you stand up in an auditorium and tell us all everything you said in that email??
If not, keep it to yourself.

Proper Email Etiquette

Email has been with us, increasingly part of mainstream culture,  since sometime in the early 1990s.  However, during that time few rules or restrictions have emerged on proper use of email.  As the socially unrestricted and workplace unregulated use of email expands, guidelines and rules for respectful and productive use of email are needed.


I suggest the following:


RULES for replying to email: Do not reply to all unless you are sure this is absolutely need-to-know necessary.

Email does not equal work. Writing an email is not equal to doing your job.  Your job is more than professional email writer.  DO NOT CYA by cc'ing your boss to prove that you told someone something when it is YOUR job to see that the job is done.

email culture introduction

We seem to currently work in an email culture where the way a person shows they are doing something is to email someone or a group of individuals to point it out.

Whole organizations of administrators seem to spend their days doing nothing but reading and sending email.

If you want something done, you email the idea, as if the generation of the email is equivalent to actually doing the work.

It seems that people are too often trying to cover themselves (CYA) by cc'ing everyone and anyone who might be remotely involved.

We see the common offense on group email replies, where no matter how menial the issue, individuals reply  to all with their personal insignificant answer, as IF we ALL care to know what THEY  are doing or thinking at any moment in time.
